Bang on a Can All-Stars have a simple mission: to give the most persuasive and exciting performances of the most genre-defying music in the world.
From uptown to downtown, this electric chamber ensemble from New York combine the punch of a rock band and the precision of a chamber ensemble, shifting moods and styles effortlessly in original compositions and fresh takes on established works. With an eclectic line-up of clarinets, cello, piano and keyboards, electric guitar, bass, percussion and drums, they blur the lines between classical and pop.
Formed by leading New York composers Michael Gordon, David Lang and Julia Wolfe, this ever-evolving collective walk the creative edges of the music world, as comfortable in back alley clubs as they are in Carnegie Hall and the Barbican Centre. Their adventurous approach and’ inventiveness have led to collaborations with Brian Eno, Steve Reich, Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore, Philip Glass and many others.
“Bang on a Can All-Stars present new music the way it should be presented – with passion, precision, dynamism, stylistic authority and a welcoming informality.” Newsday
