Last night Tura New Music and the Australian Chamber Orchestra won the Western Australian State Award for the outstanding Reef Tour 2012 in the category of Excellence in a Regional Area at the 2013 Art Music Awards announced at a gala function hosted by Australian Music Centre and APRA AMCOS on at the NIDA Parade Theatre in Sydney.
The Reef Tour 2012 was part of Tura’s annual Regional Touring Program travelling from Darwin, through the Kimberley, Pilbara, Gascoyne, Mid West and on to Perth. The collaboration with the Australian Chamber Orchestra included the Reef Residency in Carnarvon and along the Ningaloo Coast where the program for the Tour was created. The program included the world premiere of commissioned work by Iain Grandage in collaboration with didgeridoo artist Mark Atkins.
The Tour brought together the forces of ACO Artistic Director and Lead Violinist Richard Tognetti, Filmaker Mick Sowry, Cinematographer Jon Frank, Surfing Legend Derek Hynd, Composer Iain Grandage, Didgeridoo artists Mark Atkins, Singer Songwriter Stephen Pigram, ACO artists Satu Vanski ( principal violin) and Julian Thompson (cello) and ACO2, the Australian Chamber Orchestra’s emerging artists orchestra.

The Reef has gone on to tour in Europe, Japan and the USA as well as the east coast of Australia.
Tura’s annual Tour for 2013 features the Australia Art Orchestra’s collaboration with the Wagilak Songmen from Ngukurr in south east Arnhem Land from 11- 29 October. Full program released soon.
