The third concert in the 2016 Scale Variable New Chamber Music Series is The Calm Before by Soundstorm. Performing 2 November, The Calm Before is curated by Polish Australian composer Dominik Karski as part of his Soundstorm project to perform fully scored new chamber music bringing together influences from the cultural traditions of Europe, Central Asia, South America and Australia. The works in the program feature each instrument in rich configurations of performance techniques to form an intense interplay between physical actions and emotions.
The idea behind the formation of Soundstorm is centred around instrumental performance practice of adventurous and searching character. The aim of the ensemble is to present works that explore instruments and techniques of sound production in great depth, as well as offering intriguing, atypical, challenging, and rich musical experiences. A strong emphasis is placed on each performer as an individual with a unique voice, which is reflected in the first concert program consisting mostly of solo works.
Soundstorm is Kirsten Smith (flutes), Louise Devenish (percussion), Dobromila Jaskot (piano/live electronics), Catherine Ashley (harp), Tristen Parr (cello) and Joan Wright (double bass).
The Calm Before is designed to contribute to the exposure of Perth’s vibrant compositional scene with music by three Perth-based composers: Dobromila Jaskot, Pedro Alvarez and Dominik Karski, as well as a performance of Italian composer Giancinto Scelsi’s ‘Okanagon’ (1968).
