Four days of Experimental and Improvised Music across Perth
Thursday 19-22 January
Babushka, Four5Nine, Sachmo Cafe, Callaway Auditorium
Individual tickets: $5-$15. Festival pass: $40/$25 (door sales only)
Tura New Music and Tone List present a four day celebration of exploratory, experimental and improvised music. Featuring visitors from interstate, Denmark, Austria, France and Norway collaborating with and presenting alongside local artists. These events will offer the chance for audiences to witness frontier work in improvised, electronic, electro-acoustic and avant-garde jazz music.
8pm Thursday 19 January
Resonant waves of sound from Christian Meaas-Svendsen’s double-bowed contrabass ease into a duo of vocalists who explore the limits of the voice with an attention to its harmonic potential – expect throat singing and vocal multiphonics in surreal counterpoint. A new collaboration from Zabelka, Charles and O’Connor will be sure to create delicate constellations of the most precise of sounds from violin, clarinet & trumpet. From there, electro-acoustic and audio-visual explorations take over – Kynan Tan’s extraordinary digital architectures first, then the moody, polyrhythmic atmospheres of local producer Atripat.
6:30pm Friday 20 January
Callaway Auditorium, UWA
An extended set from this trio, exploring the outer-reaches of the potential of clarinet, prepared piano and voice with an extreme sense of intimacy and detail.
8:30pm Friday 20 January
Four5Nine @ The Rosemount
Christian Meaas-Svendsen returns accompanied by local free music vanguards for outsider-jazz assemblages. The sugary-noise duo of Lana & Furchick will then set the stage for the hyper-detailed electroacoustic projects of Michael Terren.
*free to ticket-holders of the previous event at Callaway Music Auditorium.
2pm Saturday 21 January
Callaway Music Auditorium, UWA
INGAR ZACH iMprov Workshop
A participatory workshop – bring your instrument and collaborate with local improvisers on developing skills for creating music spontaneously together. Featuring percussionist Ingar Zach from Norway as guest director – an artist with rich experience in improvisation working with artists such as Derek Bailey, Jim Denley, Kim Myhr, Miguel Angel Tolosa, Arve Henriksen, Burkhard Beins, and Michel Vorfeld. RSVP to email@example.com.
7pm Saturday 21 January
Callaway Music Auditorium, UWA
Christian Windfeld explores cymbals and snare drums in the most precise of manners, with intense gestures explored to their fullest potential. Mia Zabelka will return in solo-form, reimagining the violin’s possibilities in the resonant Calloway Auditorium. Ingar Zach’s will fill the space with a rich, low resonance with one of his phenomenal, not-to-be-missed solo improvisations, using the gran cassa as a resonator for bells, cymbals, feedback and a library of tiny sound makers.
2pm Sunday 22 January
Celebrating the launch of three new records and a limited edition festival zine on Tone List, with sounds ranging from contemporary guitar explorations, meditations on vulnerability through bass clarinet, and AI-controlled electro-acoustic interactions. More details on these to come very soon.
7pm Sunday 22 January
Sachmo Cafe, North Perth
