Zho Returns
The highly anticipated Club Zho '07 programme begins next Monday 18th June with an exciting venue move to The Bakery Artrage Complex. Launching this year's season with Club Zho 73 will be Melbourne-based Shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute) musician Anne Norman, along with Perth's own Ross Bolleter (accordian), and laptop ensemble Versificator.
"the shakuhachi of Anne Norman showed how moving and vocal this instrument can be in an emotionally mobile context." CLIVE O'CONNELL, THE AGE
Originally trained on flute, Anna Norman took up the shakuhachi in 1986 in Kobe under shakuhachi player Nakamura Shindo. In 1990 she received a two-year grant from the Japanese Government to study with Yamaguchi Goro at the Tokyo University of the Arts and was subsequently invited to study with the living legend of shakuhachi, Yokoyama Katsuya.
Anne currently works as a freelance musician whose primary focus is on shakuhachi performance of contemporary Australian music and collaborative fusion music in ensemble with a variety of other artists.
For her appearance at Club Zho, Anna will perform solo and as an improvised duo with Ross Bolleter, who will also create a solo piece of his own - Five Bells based on Kenneth Slessor's poem of the same name.
Supporting Anna and Ross on the night will be Versificator, a dedicated group of composition students from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts who explore the notion of deconstructing sound - making noise with laptops, radios, delay pedals, vocal effects and theremins.
