- Workers' Union : Duo Vertigo meets Defying Gravity
AMC/APRA announced on Monday that Tura New Music was a finalist in the Outstanding Contribution to Australian Music in a Regional Area category at the 2006 Classical Music Awards to be presented by APRA - http://www.apra.com.au/ - and the Australian Music Centre - http://www.amcoz.com.au/
These awards are the only to specifically honour achievements and excellence in the Australian contemporary classical music scene. Tura was nominated for its 'Voices Over WA' regional touring project in 2005 which involved 2 weeks of workshops and performances in the Kimberley and Pilbara, featuring vocal ensemble 'The Song Company'.
The awards will be held in Sydney on Monday August 7th from 6pm and will be broadcast live on ABC Classic FM.

Experience contemporary sound and hybrid performance by some of Sydney’s most acclaimed and innovative musicians, poets, vocalists, video artists and dancers.
Amanda Stewart is a poet and vocalist. Her performance explodes outside text to include utterances and non-verbal implications. ‘Amanda Stewart’s multiplied voice is all edges, plosives, throat, psssts.” (Realtime)
Jim Denley’s emphasis on spontaneity, site specific creation and collaboration have been central to his work. He sees no clear distinctions between his roles as instrumentalist, improviser and composer.
Impro-lab comprises Tess de Quincey dance, Sam James video, Amanda Stewart text and amplified voice, Jim Denley amplified sax and computer. Impro-lab is an ongoing series of laboratories, residencies and performances that specifically address interdisciplinary improvisation. Impro-lab is concerned with the language forged in the instantaneous meeting between sound, text, music, dance and visual media. It is an open-ended process of interdisciplinary exchange exploring an ecology of improvisation.
Impro-lab is presented in association with PICA where they area in residence from 12 30 July, supported by the Australian Government through the Australia Council.

World renowned percussionists Duo Vertigo, Claire Edwardes and Niels Meliefste, will present solo and duo percussion works commissioned by them from composers around the world. Up and coming young percussionist Claire Edwardes has been based in the Netherlands ever since she won the Sydney Australia Young Performer of the Year in 1999. She has since been awarded the Freedman Fellowship for Classical Music in 2005.

Hot Dutch/Australian percussion group Duo Vertigo collaborate with Perth's own Defying Gravity to present a programme of percussive marvel and mayhem, including Louis Andriessen's classic Workers' Union and Nigel Westlake's Omphalo Centric Lecture, along with works by Theo Loevendie and Michiel Heeneman.
