4-MALITY Percussion Quartet

4-MALITY is a powerful and inventive percussion quartet of young musicians formed in 1999 by Adrian Spillett, the only percussionist to win the prestigious BBC young musicians competition. They deploy an immaculately coordinated warehouse of instruments arranged into a purpose-built musical sculpture: over 40 drums, gongs, vibraphones and 7ft marimbas to name but a few. 4-MALITY perform a visually inspirational show, which defies musical categorisation, with virtuosic skill and infectious energy.

“The 4-MALITY players take the theatricality of percussion performance as a gift to be seized on, and their show runs with a slick, well-oiled purr behind the blur of mallets and the finely co-ordinated drills” Irish Times

Nova Ensemble

Ultrasound

Fremantle’s leading contemporary music group will spend a week at the Fremantle Prison composing music for a concert at the Prison at 7pm on Sunday 27 November – ultrasound. Lee Buddle (winds), Mel Robinson (‘cello) and David Pye (percussion) will “do time” at the Prison to write works that illuminate the interior spaces – cells blocks and more – of the infamous Fremantle landmark.

Nova’s musicians are renowned for their ability to create and perform music in response to extra-ordinary environments, working previously in monasteries, caves and wineries in their search for inspiration.

The premiere performance of ultrasound will be performed in a promenade-style concert at Fremantle Prison as part of the 2005 Fremantle Festival.
