Andrew Ford – Scenes from Bruegel

Brett Dean – Wolf-Lieder

This gala night of contemporary chamber music celebrates four Australian premieres from Andrew Ford and Brett Dean alongside one of Europe’s most awarded composers, Michel van der Aa. All works will be performed by the WASO New Music Ensemble with Australia’s leading new music soprano, Merlyn Quaife.

‘gripped by the virtuosity of her performance, at times creating the illusion that she was a whole cast of performers engaged in bringing to life a small-scale drama.’

Here (in circles) and Here (to be found) are central to the amazing body of work emanating from one of Holland’s finest new music exports – Michel van der Aa. Both works utilise soprano, chamber ensemble, soundtracks and texts written by the composer.

Scenes from Bruegel draws inspiration from the composer’s favourite Bruegel paintings and uses sound sources from Ford’s locale of the Southern Highlands of New South Wales.

Wolf-Lieder is Brett Dean’s latest work. This cycle of five movements is an exploration of the music and madness of the 19th Century Austrian composer Hugo Wolf. It features text from Wolf, Charles Bukowski and Jana Schuele.

All three composers will introduce their works.

WASO New Music Ensemble is committed to bringing the best of contemporary chamber music to Perth audiences. WASO is the only Australian orchestra to have a dedicated core group of musicians committed to new music, and this collaboration with Tura New Music and the Totally Huge New Music Festival is a vital part of our continuing exploration of music of our time and place.

Presented in association with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra.
