James MacMillan The Confession of Isobel Gowdie
In 1662, Isobel Gowdie from Nairn confessed to having been baptised by the devil and joining a coven. She was subsequently strangled at the stake and burned amid scenes of hysterical fright and sadism. Composer and conductor James MacMillan captures the musical soul of Scotland in this reflective requiem.
Roger Smalley Concerto No. 2 for Piano and Orchestra
WASO celebrates the unique relationship between composer and performer as John Chen, winner of the 2004 Sydney International Piano Competition, performs the virtuosic Piano Concerto No. 2 – written for him by Roger Smalley. Described as ‘…a remarkable pianist and a musician wise beyond his years’, this young performer displays a flawless dexterity and sensitivity that meet the challenge of this demanding work.
Also on the program are Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, and Elgar’s Enigma Variations
Presented as part of the WASO Wesfarmers Arts Masters Series.
