Tura New Music and the UWA Perth International Arts Festival present...

Gavin Bryars - Composer in Residence

20-27 February 2004, concerts & forums in Perth & Broome

Gavin Bryars

Acclaimed UK composer, Gavin Bryars, is the most provocative and original member of an unusually gifted generation of composers. He started his career from an experimental position rare in British music, and has continued to chart a radical course while attracting an international following.

His now famous early works, such as the indeterminately scored The Sinking of the Titanic (1969) and the classic Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet (1971), combine an openness to experience with an imagination rich in powers of association.

Tura New Music and The UWA Perth International Arts Festival are proud to present Gavin Bryars as the Composer in Residence for the 2004 Festival, creating an exciting program of performances and forums in metropolitan and regional Western Australia.

"The music of Gavin Bryars falls under no category. It is mongrel, full of sensuality and wit and is deeply moving. He is one of the few composers who can put slapstick and primal emotion alongside each other. He allows you to witness new wonders in the sounds around you by approaching them from a completely new angle. With a third ear maybe..."
