Special Performance

by Indian Sitarist Gaurav Mazumder

Commissioned to be performed in The Rothko Chapel, a spiritual environment created by the American painter Mark Rothko as a place for contemplation where men and women of all faiths, or of none, may meditate in silence, in solitude or celebration together, Morton Feldmans work of the same name is one of unique beauty and inspiration.

Feldman's music and Rothko's paintings open possibilities for each other. This is music in which silence defines sound and sound very quietly and subtly fills space -- it seems not to be “about” anything, but is somehow about everything, creating its own serene place for contemplation.

“hauntingly beautiful” ClassicsToday

Leading Indian musician, Gaurav Mazumdar will complete the evening with a performance of music on the sitar.  Mazumdar’s performances have been described as ‘creating a becalming oasis in the turbulence of today’.

This is a special opportunity to view the Seeking Transcendence exhibition with the accompaniment of two sublime musical experiences.
