Perth audiences will be treated to an evening of New Australian Chamber Music at Tura New Music’s Scale Variable 07.
Premiered on the night will be Cathie Travers’ new work Sanctuary – commissioned by the Australian Wildlife Conservancy for contemporary music ensemble pi.
One of WA’s most acclaimed composers, Cathie has previously been commissioned by the Australian Chamber Orchestra, the West Australian Ballet, and the Sydney Festival and has been hailed by critics as a virtuosic musician and most talented composer.
Sanctuary has been created to celebrate the Mt Gibson Wildlife Sanctuary (awc.org.au), located 350kms North-East of Perth and covering 130,000ha. Particular influences in the work include the Mallee fowl, represented by the solemn and heartbreaking music of Nuevo-tango, and the Chocolate Wattled Bat, prevalent in the Vesper movement, and described by Travers as music for sunset.
Other works on the concert programme include Jarrah, (The life of a giant) a new work composed by Lee Buddle and David Pye, inspired by an ancient gnarled jarrah tree in the forest of Dwellingup, and The Seasons, a composition by David Pye, performed with poetry written by Kevin Gillam, inspired by Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, and transposed to the Australian climate.
Performing all works on the night, pi is comprised of eleven classical musicians of the highest calibre and is renowned for its unique blend of strings, winds and percussion, underpinned by the rich reedy sounds of the accordion and harmonium.
“A galvanising voice in Australian music, the pi ensemble is composed of classically trained musicians of the highest caliber and is renowned for its unique blend of strings, winds and percussion, underpinned by the rich seedy sounds of the accordion and harmonium.”
