the ngukurr arts centre is a hub of the cultural life of the ngukurr community. one of ngukurr’s most venerated artists sambo barra barra passed away in 2005. the last of his works at the arts centre, ‘dead one’, has immense meaning to the community. tura partner total e&p australia, via sponsorship of ngukurr arts, has ensured that the painting will remain in ngukurr in perpetuity. the painting will travel to perth as part of the crossing roper bar tour and be on display at the perth concert hall.
ngukurr elders, including songmen for the crossing roper bar tour, have performed special ceremony and song to celebrate the painting on its travel and its permanent future in ngukurr.
‘ceremony for this one long time ago – when person passed away – bones from that person we sing song corroboree and put them away in log coffin, and take to the cave. old culture story this one, important one.’
