Liquid Architecture 10: Festival of Sound Arts is a landmark occasion for the festival and for sound culture in Australia. Celebrating its tenth consecutive year, the Liquid Architecture sound festival runs for four weeks and goes to seven cities across Australia, presenting an exciting program of contemporary sound arts.
The Perth event features Swiss sound and visual artist Jason Kahn, German trio Perlonex "somewhere in the no man's land between electro-acoustic, industrial noise, ambient, minimal" and Brisbane electro acoustic artist Joel Stern "using field recordings, contact microphones, a sonic raygun, a baby moniter, trumpet, found objects….and processes too obscure to mention."
The breadth of diversity of artists and artistic practices includes meticulous recorded work, improvised instrumental performance, new sound for screen work, radical uses of digital technology, inventive self-made sound making devices and historically informed practices.
LA 10 has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its principal arts funding and advisory body.
Joel Stern is assisted by Sound Travellers,
Perlonex is supported by the Berlin Senate Cultural Affairs Department and
Jason Kahn is supported by Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia.
JASON KAHN (SWITZ)
Jason Kahn's work includes sound installation, performance and composition. He was born in New York in 1960, grew up in Los Angeles and relocated to Europe in 1990. He currently lives in Zürich. He has given concerts and exhibited sound installations throughout Europe, North and South America, Japan, Mexico, Korea, Israel, Turkey, Russia, Lebanon, Egypt, Hong Kong, New Zealand and Australia.
Kahn performs both solo and in collaborations, using percussion, analog synthesizer or computer in different combinations. He composes for electronics, acoustic instruments and environmental recordings. For larger groups of directed improvisation he has devised a system of graphical scores. Kahn creates his sound installations for specific spaces. The focus of these primarily non-visual works lies in the perception of space through sound.
