zho 80

For one Perth show only, Club Zho 80 will showcase the most cutting edge New Music and improvised jazz artists at the iconic New Music venue, the Hellenic Centre on SATURDAY 7th JUNE 2008.

Alex Masso & Peter Farrar (NSW)

Alex Masso is one of Sydney's emerging jazz & improvising drummers, while Peter Farrar, saxophonist, is a virtuoso performer deeply passionate about jazz and all forms of improvised music. The Sydney duo are touring Australia and together they demonstrate that improvised music is thriving in this country. These artists are not concerned with jazz as a referential means of making music but are instead developing their own vocabularies and syntaxes.

The pair began playing as a duo in 2005 while studying jazz at Sydney Conservatorium of Music. In this time Masso and Farrar have been consistently involved with the Splinter Orchestra, formed the group 'Quarantine' with Rod Cooper (Melbourne) and Rory Brown, performed with the unique musician Gerard Crewdson, and in April 2008 with creative music legend Wadada Leo Smith. Both are closely involved with the NOWnow Festival of Spontaneous Sound in Sydney.

(.....mumblefunk) Simon Jeans & Daniel Susnjar (WA)

Originating from a jam session in 2001 (…..mumblefunk) is Perth guitarist Simon Jeans and drummer Daniel Susnjar form the duo. Their performance relies heavily on spontaneity, interaction and improvisation with elements of free jazz, rock, funk and electronica.

Sharing the same musical vision, their concept is to build spontaneous compositions that are often (but not always) from established elements, with the freedom to take the piece in any direction the performers see fit. From blends of acoustic and electronic, to pure unaltered jazz, this eclectic mix of musicians are united by their search for new music horizons.
