JANEK SCHAEFER (UK) - ARCHITECT OF FOUNDSOUNDSCAPES

Manipulated field recordings are combined with live modified vinyl and found sound in a 'Concrete ruffian style' [The Wire 1998]. His most recent work has been examining the role of vinyl as a compositional tool with the 'Skate' LP/installation 'Wow' 7" and the 'On/Off LP'. His second album 'Above Buildings' was released on Fat Cat records to considerable praise, [The Guardian newspaper CD of the week]. He formed 'Comae' the improvisational electro-acoustic duo with Robert Hampson [MAIN] in 1999 with their debut album being released in 2001. Further collaborations are due for release with Philip Jeck, Rothko, Gino Zardo [an NY photographer/field recordist] and Staphen Mathieu/Radboud Mens/Timeblind. Janek now operates from his Oval office in London. His recent album 'Pulled Under' was released in 2002 on his own audiOh!Recordings label to launch his web site - audiOh.com.

Janek was chosen as 'Sound Designer of the Year' by Creative Review magazine in London 1999. He was awarded an 'Honorary Mention' at the Prix Ars Electronica 2001 Digital Musics competition and was selected as a 'McKnight Composer in Residence' for the State of Minnesota, USA 2002/3.
