OBLIVION & THE HIDDEN QUEST

Stuart James with many friends

This work explores ideas associated with notions such as destiny, fate, and the wheel of fortune. Throughout the work, ambiguity and uncertainty give rise to the notion that there is no meaning in anything, and that perhaps the only reliable constant is change.

The work uses a combination of live instruments and electronics. The live instruments have two separate live feeds, one of which is processed through the computer on a virtual instrument that uses an entire array of audio processing functions. This instrument has been designed on Reaktor for the purposes of this composition alone.

Movements:
The Universe
The Way of the Cross
Karmic Transition and the Spiral Inward
Cause and Effect
Recognition and Temperance
The Zenith

PABLO DALI

Matt Rosener and Jason Davy

Pablo Dali is a new collective that creates minimal ambient music with experimental undercurrents. The Pablo Dali concept was originally conceived by Matt Rosener and Jason Davy, both members of the post rock electro band "ok tokyo", who desired to create music that was sparse and ambient using acoustic and electronic sound sources.

Being based in the rural south west of Western Australia has allowed the Pablo Dali sound to be influenced by wide open spaces and isolation, two themes that run through most Pablo Dali pieces.

In the live arena Pablo Dali attempts to take the audience on a journey to an ambient futurist place as synths and samples flow into each other and sparse percussion crashes in the distance. Most pieces are constantly evolving with improvisation also a key in Pablo Dali performances. Pablo Dali is currently recording an album which will hopefully be available sometime in 2002.

THE THEORY: The doggox is an elusive mythical creature born out of local contemporary youth culture. The doggox ('dog' symbolises loyalty, playfulness, forgiveness and friendship (i.e. the idea of a dog being man's best friend; the 'ox' ox is derived from common Australianisms from the youth culture of the 'ox generation' such as 'mintox' (Mint being an exclamation of joy or an enthusiastic description of something that is really good.) represents the conflict between the continuum of independent but informed critical thinking, and the many set conventions, systems, traditions, and ideologies that shape the individual and society. The doggox not only deals with both the light and darkness within the human condition, but with the struggle of the individual within society in the search for meanings and truths.

THE MUSIC: The Doggox Art Orchestra is essentially an eclectic independent ensemble set up for and by young composers. The objective of the Doggox project is to maintain a stable orchestral environment that is open to all forms of musical expression, and encourages composers to develop their own personal style, by giving them the opportunity to have their works performed independent from traditional institutions, and free from the distractions and impurities of the commercial music industry; thereby releasing composers from the social pressures that constrict their creativity.
