GIVE ME BACK MY RAGS, THE OPEN SOURCE PROJECT
MAY 20 2002
GIVE ME BACK MY RAGS
Music Theatre by Nela Trifkovic
Performed by Ash Randomly with Boris Radmilovich
Using her own unique blend of music, theatre and performance art, Nela Trifkovic's latest work sets the poetry of a modern Yugoslavian poet Vasko Popa who has also been described as "a savage romantic poet". This new cycle consists of a prologue and 13 songs. The musical influences are once again those of: Klezmer, Gypsy and Slavic music, but this time they travel from the spheres of ancient ethnic (such as the chant-like, Bulgarian influenced prologue) to the most "up to date" euphoric Yugo-cabaret like music that is evocative of the vibrant sound tracks to Emir Kusturica's films (such as cabaret style number "What About My Rags").
THE OPEN SOURCE PROJECT
Ben Phillips (alto sax), Matt Willis (bass) & Darren Moore (drums)
Featuring the musical talents of three of Perth's most interesting improvisers, The Open Source Project has been a unified artistic vision. Since its formation in January 2002, the project has incorporated varying musical influences in the tradition of the Open Sourcing practice, a concept borrowed from software development. The basic idea is the modification, assimilation and integration of original compositions and ever-evolving concepts. The aim is to construct and deconstruct modes for improvisation using this premise. Commencing from a Free Jazz framework, influences are drawn from many genres, including the downtown New York avant-garde scene, the jazz tradition, funk, latin, twentieth century classical composers, electronica, hardcore music and contempory improvisers and composers of today.
Similar to the old chinese proverb of the drunk man who keeps himself company with his shadow, the projects three individual members make the group collective - a fourth member, with a direction, evolution and mind of its own
