GRAHAM COLLIER (UK) AND THE HIVE
SEPTEMBER 17 2001
Graham Collier’s career spans three decades of innovation at the forefront of British jazz as a composer, author and educator. Having released over a dozen albums, authored seven books, and lectured and performed around the world, Collier’s achievements are best summarised by his receipt of an OBE in 1987 for services to jazz.
Of his work, Collier says: "I use the individual voices of the musicians as improvisers, and the combination of those voices into textures, to create music which is only fully realised in performance. | Whatever the level involved, the musicians must be able to suspend their belief in a leader who has total control. The performance is the result of a continuous three-way process between the composer/director, the musicians and the given material. The philosophy behind these ideas is that it is the individual who is important, and that combining a set of individuals can provoke an engaging result".
Perth audiences will have the opportunity to hear the results of Collier’s philosophy when he conducts The Hive in a performance of his work at Club Zho in September.
The Hive is an exciting new voice for contemporary music, a 15-piece collective of some of Perth’s best composers and musicians. Established as a vehicle to experiment with crossing the boundaries of musical style in a large ensemble, composers are able to fuse classical, jazz and popular music within original compositions and hear their creations realised. Their second Club Zho performance, The Hive will also perform original compositions by local composers and Hive members Lindsay Vickery, Cathie Travers and Adrian Kelly.
During his visit, Graham Collier will also be taking open rehearsals at the WA Academy of Performing Arts. More details from WAAPA. Graham appears at Club Zho courtesy of the WA Academy of Performing Arts at Edith Cowan University
